Welcome to the guide on lavender essential oil and its uses, I’ll also touch briefly on where to purchase lavender essential oil.
The non toxic, non irritating and non-sensitizing lavender essential oil is steam distilled, using the flowering tops of the plant. Lavender essential oil is known to help calm anxiety and stress related symptoms, including muscle tension, headaches, migraines, insomnia and palpitations. Lavender helps lift the spirit, dispel depression and nurtures creativity promoting mental acuity, health, love and peace with its aromatic influence. If you are going to buy one essential oil, lavender oil is your go to, so versatile, yet with so many therapeutic benefits.

Lavender FieldA trial conducted in 1993 with help from the Bristol Royal Infirmary used two types of lavender essential oil, applied topically to post-cardiotomy patients, to determine the emotional and behavioral stress levels before and after the lavender oil treatment. The two different types of lavender oil used  were Lavendula burnatii and L. angustifolia.

The results showed that patients anxiety levels went from ‘very tense’

to ‘very relaxed’ within 20 minutes after the patient receiving an gentle massage using 5% blend of L. Burnatii.

The key findings from the study are:

  • Aromatherapy does have measurable therapeutic effects.
  • The therapeutic effects aren’t just from massage, touch or placebo
  • The choice of essential oils does matter
  • One type of lavender was twice as effective as the other for anxiety.
  • Both species of lavender helped with respiration. 20 out of 24 patients had slower, deeper breathing

Ways to Apply Lavender Essential Oil

How to Use : When used topically it can be applied directly with no dilution, targeting reflex points and focus target area. Lavender essential oil can be diffused or directly inhaled.  1 or 2 drops can be placed under the tongue or added to food or drinks for flavor.

*Lavender oil is recognized as safe for humans to consume by the FDA. A way to prepare the oil for consumption is to dilute one drop of lavender essential oil into a teaspoon of honey. Another way to consume is to add one drop of lavender oil to approximately 100ml of soy or rice milk.

Measurement Guideline with Carrier and Base Oils

Just a general guideline into how much lavender essential oil should be diluted with carrier oil to be used on your skin.

I am currently working on a carrier oil guide for ‘Funk of the Earth‘  but in the meantime I’ll briefly explain what carrier or base oils are best for massage purposes.  It’s best to use a light vegetable carrier oil or base such as sweet almond oil, grape-seed or jojoba oil.  Soya or sunflower could also be used.

Ways to increase the shelf-life of the lavender blends is to add a little wheatgerm oil to it, that also being the benefit of jojoba oil. Since jojoba is a liquid wax and does not go rancid.

Making the lavender essential oil blend should be around 2 -3% for your skin and around 5% to get a more concentrated effect on a target area of pain etc.

20 Drops of essential oil = 1 ml

The easiest way to calculate the percentage to achieve 2.5 % dilution is to measure the carrier oils milliliters and the apply half the number of drops with the lavender oil.

e.g  100mls Carrier oil with 50 drops of lavender essential oil  = 2.5%

e.g (2)  50 mls Carrier oil with 50 drops of lavender essential oil = 5%

I plan to keep adding more remedies to the list for lavender. It is such a versatile, robust plant with so many uses.  Babies, young children and pregnant women should take care when using essential oils.  It is not recommended to use undiluted lavender essential oil for children under 18 months.   Always consult a doctor first before trying alternative remedies etc, check for allergies and for possible adverse reactions with other medication. I am not a medical professional. Essential oils should not be taken internally.
